Description: Ans. is b i.e. 3 weeks Iron Deficiency Anemia can be managed by : Oral iron Parenteral iron Blood Oral Iron Therapy : Preferred salt - ferrous salts Dose : For prophylaxis - 100 mg of elemental iron with 0.5 mg folic acid. For treatment - 180 mg of elemental iron (3 tablets of ferrous sulfate as 1 tablet of 100 mg ferrrous sulphate releases 60 mg of elemental iron). Treatment is continued till blood parameters become normal, after which a maintenance dose of 1 tablet daily should be given for atleast 3 months after delivery to replenish the iron stores Response of Therapy is evidenced by : Patients feel good and have a better appetite. Hematologicaly - increased reticulocyte count within 5-10 days of therapy. Rise in hemoglobin - 0.3gm-1gm per week, which is seen after 3 weeks of initiation of oral therapy.deg (According to COGDT, 10/ed, p 407 -- Hemoglobin levels should increase by atleast 0.3g/dl/week if the patient is responding to therapy) If there is no significant clinical or hematological improvement within 3 weeks, diagnostic re-evaluation is needed. Also know . Contraindications to oral iron therapy ? Intolerance to oral iron. Severe anaemia in advanced pregnancy : Parenteral therapy / blood transfusion is given.
