Description: Maternal diabetes mellitus cause delayed fetal lung maturation. Maternal hyperglycemia causes fetal hyperglycemia which in turn causes fetal hyperinsulinemia. Fetal hyperinsulinemia impairs surfactant production in the lung which in turn causes delay in lung maturity and predisposes to respiratory distress syndrome.
