Which one of the following is NOT a fuel for gluconeogenesis?

Correct Answer: Acetyl CoA
Description: Acetyl CoA, however, does paicipate in the inactivation of pyruvate dehydrogenase, so that pyruvate preferentially forms oxaloacetate pyruvate carboxylase. Oxaloacetate is then conveed into malate, which is transpoed from the mitochondria into the cytoplasm where it is conveed back into oxaloacetate. The oxaloacetate is then conveed into phosphoenolpyruvate using phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and GTP, thus completing the first step in the gluconeogenic process. Glycerol is only metabolized by the liver, which has glycerol kinase. Glycerol kinase conves glycerol into glycerol 3-phosphate, which is conveed into dihydroxyacetone phosphate, a three-carbon intermediate for gluconeogenesis. Lactate is conveed back into pyruvate, the key substrate for gluconeogenesis, by lactate dehydrogenase. The oxidation of odd-chained fatty acids produces propionyl CoA, which is eventually conveed into succinyl CoA in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Succinyl CoA is eventually conveed into succinate- malate- oxaloacetate- glucose. Ref : Biochemistry by U. Satyanarayana 3rd edition Pgno : 258
