What is the treatment of choice for Baholin’s abscess?

Correct Answer: Marsupialisation
Description: In a case of Baholin's abscess, abscess is incised and drained and the cute edges of the abscess cavity are marsupalized and packed with gauze which is removed the next day. Alternately, a word catheter can be used. Baholin's glands (great vestibular glands) are located at the vaginal orifice at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions. They are lined with cuboidal epithelium and secrete mucoid material to keep the vulva moist. Their ducts are lined with transitional epithelium and their obstruction secondary to inflammation may lead to the development of a Baholin's cyst or abscess . Cyst or abscess which fail to resolve after drainage or those which occur in patients more than 40 years of age should be biopsied to exclude malignancy. Ref: Williams Obstetrics, 23e, chapter 40
