Description: First generation drugs like norfloxacin have narrow spectrum. The concentration of norfloxacin reached in urine is bactericidal, thus it can be used for UTI but it is not effective for systemic use.   Second-generation drugs like ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin are effective against gonorrhoea and other gram-negative organisms including pseudomonas. Ciprofloxacin is the drug of choice for prophylaxis and treatment of anthrax and for  prophylaxis of meningococcal meningitis.  Ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin are the only fluoroquinolones effective against Pseudomonas.
