Description: (Refer: Rajesh Bardale - Principles of Forensic medicine & Toxicology, 1st edition, pg no: 459) Lead poisoning The dangers of lead toxicity, the clinical manifestations of which are termed Plumbism exposed to lead chiefly via paints, cans, plumbing fixtures, and leaded gasoline. Symptomatic lead poisoning is characterized by Abdominal pain and irritability followed by Lethargy, Insomnia Anorexia, Pallor (resulting from anemia), ataxia, and slurred speech. Convulsions, coma, and death due to generalized cerebral edema and renal failure occur in the most severe cases. Anemia, punctuate basophilia, constipation are seen.  Punctuate basophilia is early manifestation of chronic lead poisoning. A "lead line" appears at the gingiva-tooth border after prolonged high-level exposure. (Blue line)   Burtonian line Treatment for lead toxicity entails the use of chelating agents, principally Edetate calcium disodium (Ca EDTA), dimercaprol, penicillamine, and succimer, which is given orally and has relatively few side effects.
