Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy also known as stress cardiomyopathy, apical ballooning syndrome or 'Broken Hea Syndrome' is a type of dilated cardiomyopathy seen predominately in older women (usually over the age of 50 years) after sudden intense emotional or physical stress. It is thought to be caused by the release of catecholamines (adrenergic surge) from severe physical and/or emotional stress. The ventricle shows global ventricular dilation with basal contraction forming the shape of a narrow necked jar called 'Taka-Tsubo' which is used in Japan to trap octopi. In the majority of cases all the symptoms are resolved in 3to 7 days without any residual effects.
