Secondary hyperuricemia associated with gout can be caused by the same mechanisms as primary gout. There are secondary associations with diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, polycythemia rubra vera, leukemia, multiple myeloma, diuretic therapy, and the treatment of disseminated carcinomas.
