Description: Nocardia species are Gram-positive, catalase positive, rod-shaped bacteria that show true branching both in culture and in stains from clinical lesions. The species most common in human infection (N asteroides and N brasiliensis) are weakly acid-fast. Nocardia typically exhibit varying degrees of acid fastness due to the mycolic acid content of the cell wall. Mucin stains can also stain nocardia.
