Autonomic neuropathy may reduce counter-regulatory hormone release (especially catecholamines), leading to an inability to sense hypoglycemia appropriately (hypoglycemia unawareness, thereby subjecting the patient to the risk of severe hypoglycemia and complicating effos to improve glycemic control.
