Description: Cyclosporine selectively suppresses cell-mediated immunity, prevents graft rejection and vet leaves the recipient with enough immune ctivity to combat bacterial infection. Unlike cytotoxic immunosuppressants, it is free of toxic effects on bone marrow and RE system. Humoral immunity remains intact. However, it is a nephrotoxic-the major limitation and impairs liver function. Other adverse effects are sustained the rise in BP, precipitation of diabetes, anorexia, lethargy, hyperkalemia, oppounistic infections, hirsutism, gum hyperplasia, tremor and seizures. Cyclosporine is the most effective drug for the prevention and treatment of graft rejection reaction. It is routinely used in the renal, hepatic, cardiac, bone marrow and other transplantations.
