Description: Carpal tunnel syndrome results from compression of the median nerve in the wrist. It is common during pregnancy and can occur as a complication of trauma, degenerative ahritis, tenosynovitis, diabetes mellitus, myxedema, and acromegaly. Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome presents with numbness and tingling, clumsiness which worsens with repeated use, in digits supplied by median nerve. Wasting of thenar eminence is also noted. On examination there is impaired sensation in the median nerve distribution of the hand, weakness and wasting of abductor pollicis brevis and opponens pollicis muscles.
