An aliquot of Escherichia coli is treated with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The first wash is analyzed and found to contain alkaline phosphatase, DNase, and penicillinase. The anatomic area of the cell affected by the EDTA is most likely to have been the
