All of the following viruses can cause viral encephalitis, EXCEPT:
Correct Answer: Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2)
Description: HSV2 infections usually affects the genital regions. It does not cause encephalitis. Primary genital infections includes vesicles or ulcers localized to cervix, vagina, vulva, perineum of female or penis in male. Lesions are painful associated with inguinal lymphadenopathy. 10-20% cases develop aseptic meningitis. The most commonly identified viruses causing sporadic cases of acute encephalitis in immunocompetent adults are herpesviruses (HSV, VZV, EBV). Arboviruses such as Alphaviruses (e.g., EEE virus, western equine encephalitis virus), Flaviviruses (e.g., WNV, St. Louis encephalitis virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, Powassan virus), and Bunyaviruses (e.g., California encephalitis virus serogroup, La Crosse virus) and CMV cause encephalitis in patients with CD4 count less than 50cells/mm3. Nipah virus is an emerging viral pathogen that cause encephalitis.
