Sodium Biarbonate Sodium bicarbonate was earlier believed to cause movement of potassium inside the cells. It has now been demonstrated that Na Bicarbonate does not cause movement of potassium inside the cells even when infused for 4-6 hrs. Instead. - Sodium bicarbonate causes excretion of potassium from the body. When sodium bicarbonate is administered at a rate designed to alkalinize the urine it enhances urinary K+ excretion. This also benefits in metabolic acidosis.
