Correct Answer: Time interval between the treatment of the mother and her delivery
Description: Evaluation and Treatment of Infants in the First Month of Life - Transmission does not depend on time interval between the treatment of the mother and her delivery. The diagnosis of congenital syphilis is complicated by the transplacental transfer of maternal non-treponemal and treponemal immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to the fetus. All infants born to reactive mothers should be evaluated with a quantitative non-treponemal serologic test (RPR or VDRL) performed on infant serum. All infants born to reactive mother should be examined thoroughly for evidence of congenital syphilis. Dark field microscopic examination or direct fluorescent antibody staining of suspicious lesions or body fluids (e.g., nasal discharge) also should be performed.
