In patients with AIDS , the development of multiple red hemangioma-like lesions points to Bacillary angiomatosis which is caused by Baonella henselae. Bacillary angiomatosis aka Bacillary epithelioid angiomatosis or epithelioid angiomatosis is a disease of severely immunocompromised patients Caused by B. henselae Characterized by neovascular proliferative lesions involving the skin and other organs.Occur primarily in HIV infected persons with CD4+ T cell counts of <100/mL Biopsy specimens show clusters of bacilli that stain positively with the Wahin-Starry stain Disseminated visceral disease is seen primarily in immunocompromised hosts but can occur in immunocompetent individuals Treatment - Erythromycin (500 mg PO qid for 3 months) or Doxycycline (100 mg PO bid for 3 months) B. henselaecauses- Bacillary angiomatosis & cat scratch fever Baonella bacilliformis causes- Oraya fever Baonella quintana causes- Trench fever
