A 3-year-old girl is brought for diarrhea of 2 weeks duration. She weights 8 kg and her height is 93 cm. What IV fluids should she be given?

Correct Answer: 10% dextrose
Description: Milk and water are both fine. However, if your child refuses solids, give your child just milk, rather than water. Most toddlers don&;t need oral glucose-electrolyte solutions such as Pedialyte unless the child is dehydrated. Avoid fruit juices, because they all make diarrhea worse. If IV is required then give dextrose. Reference: GHAI Essential pediatrics, 8th edition
