There is a generalized osteopaenia (loss of bone density) within the jaws and a thinning of cortices. The normal trabecular pattern is altered with a fine granular appearance. The lamina dura of the teeth is lost either generally or locally. Localised bone lesions also occur within the jaws as the disease progresses.
These are referred to as “brown tumours”. They are often multiple.
