Description: SSSS/ Pemphigus Neonatorum / Ritter's disease: - Caused by: Staph. aureus - Seen in neonates and infants - Usually follows pharyngeal infection. - Staph. aureus releases Exfoliative toxins A & B that destroys Desmoglein 1 - Mucosal involvement absent - Epidermal separation occurs superficially. - Nikolsky sign positive - when pressure applied tangentially to skin, overlying epidermis will separate. Treatment of SSSS - Usually requires hospitalisation i/v antibiotics are given. A penicillinase-resistant, anti-staphylococcal antibiotic such as flucloxacillin is used. Other antibiotics include nafcillin, oxacillin, cephalosporin and clindamycin.
