Which of the following inhibits gastric secretion and motility?
Correct Answer: Somatostatin
Description: Vasoactive intestinal peptide, also known as the vasoactive intestinal polypeptide or VIP, is a peptide hormone that is vasoactive.VIP is produced in many tissues of veebrates including the gut, pancreas, and hypothalamus in the brain. With respect to the digestive system, VIP seems to induce smooth muscle relaxation (lower esophageal sphincter, stomach, gallbladder), stimulate secretion of water into pancreatic juice and bile, and cause inhibition of gastric acid secretion and absorption from the intestinal lumen. -Gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), is an inhibiting hormone of the secretin family of hormones. It was found to decrease the secretion of stomach acid to protect the small intestine from acid damage, reduce the rate at which food is transferred through the stomach, and inhibit the GI motility and secretion of acid. -Somatostatin is secreted by D cells located adjacent to parietal cells in gastric glands. Somatostatin inhibits HCl secretion by inhibiting adenylyl cyclase. -Ghrelin is one of the principal hypothalamic polypeptides which increase food intake. Ref: Guyton,11e
