If the gastrointestinal tract is functioning and can be safely accessed, then enteral feeding is preferred because it is safer, less expensive and more physiological. Enteral feeding helps maintain the gut barrier function and decrease post op. infections complications. Even if it is necessary to employ intravenous feeding, a propoion of the pts' nutritional requirements should be given through enteral route, if possible. Enteral nutrition may be administered orally or through feeding tubes inseed into the stomach or small intestine the nose or the abdominal wall.
