The normal liver span measures about 12- 15 cm and a lover span of 19cm suggests and chlorged liver. Presence of esophageal varices suggests poal hypeension due to advanced liver disease / cirrhosis or occlusion of poal vein. Venoocclusive disease, Budd chiari syndrome, Hematochromatosis and Alcohol liver disease may all present with an enlarged liver and poal hypeension (esophageal varices).
